Summary This paper deals with a part classification system which is capable of classifying the rough shapes of input part model based on arbitrary classification criteria specified by the user. A method is proposed to describe the classification criteria by geometric features required for individual part groups and the hierarchical relations among the part groups. Predicate logic is adopted for representing the geometric features of part groups. A systematic procedure is developed to update the classification criteria when the part groups determined by the system differ from ones selected by the production engineer. The effectiveness of the proposed classification system is confirmed through case studies in which various kinds of classification criteria are applied.
