Abstract
Using 4‐cyano‐1‐phenyl‐4,5‐dihydro‐1H‐v‐triazole (1) as initiator, the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in benzene solution was performed at 75°C. The initial rate of polymerization was proportional to [1]0,43 and [MMA]1,27. The polymerization proceeded by a radical mechanism. The overall activation energy for the polymerization was 71,8 kJ mol−1 (at 65–85°C). The chain‐transfer constant of 1 for MMA was estimated as 0,0 at 75°C. The rate of thermal decomposition of 1 was also measured and the following rate equation was obtained: kd = 6,79 · 1014 exp (−121/RT) s−1 (E in kJ) (at 60–80°C). Based upon the experimental evidence, a mechanism is discussed for the initiation of the polymerization.
