Abstract 1. 1. Spontaneously firing action potentials were record extracellulary from the neurones in the olfactory bulb of the goldfish, Carassius auratus L., using stainless steel microelectrodes. 2. 2. The responses of each type of bulbar cell to various chemical stimuli applied to the olfactory epithelium were complex, and a variety of firing patterns have been described. 3. 3. Repetitive electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral olfactory tract led eventually to inhibition of most spontaneously firing neurones in the olfactory bulb. The effect was often cumulative in character. The long time course of this inhibition suggests the accumulation of an inhibitory transmitter substance. 4. 4. Facilitation of the spontaneous firing activity of the bulbar neurones was aided by stimulation of the ipsilateral olfactory tract. Evidence is presented for the presence of an olfactory-preoptic activating fibre system. 5. 5. Spontaneously firing discharges of the bulbar neurones were also inhibited by stimulation of the contralateral olfactory tract. The role of mutual interbulbar connexions in the physiological mechanism of olfactory discrimination is discussed briefly.
