Abstract 1. 1. Changes in the responsiveness of melanophores to various pigment-aggregating agents were examined in the medaka, Oryzias talipes (wild type), after prolonged adaptation to different backgrounds. 2. 2. In the fish adapted to a white background, the sensitivity of melanophores to norepinephrine was reduced. 3. 3. The pigment-aggregating response to melatonin was diminished in the fish adapted to a black background and also in sympathectomized fish. 4. 4. The effects on melanophores of MCH at various concentrations differed between the black and the white adapted fish. 5. 5. These results indicate that prolonged adaptation to a particular background has a definite effect not only on the morphological color change but also on the responsiveness of melanophores to neural and hormonal factors that control the motility of chromatophores.
