Flexible downlink/uplink frequency resource allocation for software-based wireless multimedia communications

Description

In the near future, not only conventional voice transmission but data transfer, video transmission and so on will be provided in mobile radio communications. "Software radio" technology, which can change transmission format adaptively, has great advantage in the so-called "multimedia" communications. In this paper, using a typical multimedia service model which is supposed to be provided in third- or fourth-generation mobile communications, the system performance is evaluated for such a software radio environment. Furthermore, a flexible frequency resource allocation algorithm is proposed, and its potential in terms of multimedia handling capability and spectral efficiency is discussed.
