Volume-preserving surface reconstruction from volume data
Description
The marching cubes algorithm has been widely used as a means to convert volume data such as CT and MRI into surface data. However, it does not preserve volume. It is shown that the reconstructed 3D objects by the algorithm will become a bit smaller when the original objects are generally convex. We present an algorithm which approximately preserves the volume in the conversion. Our main idea is to adjust voxel values so as to equalize the reconstructed volume with the original voxel value. It is shown that our volume-preserving algorithm can reconstruct the original shape better than the original marching cubes algorithm.
