Description

Through previous work the authors have clarified that the time difference between the box-pressure of a body plethysmograph and the airflow has a close relationship to nonuniformities of pulmonary ventilation. An apparatus was therfore built for measuring the above displacement time, to show the uneven characteristics of ventilation in patients. The divice consists mainly of three parts; (1) a peak discriminator, (2) display circuits and (3) + or —discriminator. By means of this device the peak points of the box-pressure and airflow curves were discriminated and the time difference between the two peaks were recorded, where the sequence of these peaks was also discriminated. Using the apparatus, the time displacements of the box-pressure and the airflow were widely investigated in patients. The results indicated a possibility of application for clinical use by which detection of features and grades of the inequality in mechanical respiratory properties can be made.
