Adsorption of nitric oxide on cerium oxide

Description

Abstract Adsorption of NO on evacuated CeO2 has been investigated by gravimetric, IR, and ESR measurements. On reduced sites, NO was decomposed into N2 or N2O accompanied by incorporation of oxygen into the surface. The oxygen adsorbed on the surface was identified by infrared study. Simultaneously, the hyponitrite ion which could be a precursor to the formation of N2 and N2O was detected. On a partially reduced surface, NO was adsorbed as a chelating NO2 species consisting of adsorbed NO and surface oxygen. Furthermore, dinitrosyl complex Ce(NO)2 and adsorbed radical were detected as the reversibly adsorbed species.
