High-density excitation by heavy ions: Techniques of fast measurements of emission decay of BaF2 single crystal

Description
Abstract A new technique for fast measurement of emission decay by heavy-ion irradiation is presented. A half lifetime measured on 2200 A emission of BaF 2 , known to have sub nanosecond lifetime, is 250 ± 50 ps. Mechanisms for this emission and 3100 A emission with two components are discussed along with suppression of emission at low temperature. It is shown that emission and decay mechanisms are considerably different from the case of usual alkali halides.
