T RANSESOPHAGEAL ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY (TEE) has gained widespread acceptance over the past decade as an intraoperative monitoring and diagnostic tool for adult cardiac surgery. The recent development of a small transducer permits extension of the application of TEE to infants and small children. 1,2 Ventricular septation is an operation designed to c r e a t e a n e w prosthetic septum in a patient with a single ventr icle) Evaluation of the chamber size and function of the newly created right and left ventricles is reportedly essential f o r achieving favorable postoperative hemodynamics ~ i th this surgery. 4-6 Based on experience with TEE during the septation operation, the authors believe this monitoring device is essential for intraoperative management.
