Description
Abstract 1. 1. The absorption spectra of the haemoglobin of Ceriodaphnia quadrangula was measured. 2. 2. Pink animals had a Hb concentration twelve times as high as that of pale ones. 3. 3. C. quadrangula showed a constant O2 consumption rate over a wide range of O2 concentration. The critical O2 concentration was 0.9 and 0.3 ml O2/l for pale and pink animals respectively. 4. 4. The O2 concentration in the water of pale animal habitation was high, whereas that of pink animal habitation was low and characterized by a large vertical O2 gradient. 5. 5. The physiological significance of Hb in pale and pink animals was discussed from these results.
