説明

Abstract Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in Japan. Thus, general thoracic surgeons play an important role in decreasing the cancer burden. The core skills and knowledge of general thoracic surgeons are common globally. However, the medical system or circumstances around surgeons differ among countries. The Japanese training system has pursued developing high-quality specialists as well as meeting the social expectation of equal accessibility of standard medical care across Japan. Herein, we describe the present status of the General thoracic surgery training program in Japan. This program covers several important factors including technique acquisition, knowledge enhancement, and competency evaluation. We also identify important aspects of the program that need to be improved in the near future.
