<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The reaction of aldehyde (I) with acids (II) in the presence of Py (or another tert. amine) proceeds via a reversible formation of hydroxy intermediate (III) (isolable) which decarboxylates (rate determining step) to give compound (IV) (Hann and Lapworth mechanism).</jats:p>
