本書は、新しい分野である計算細胞生物学に必要な細胞シュミレーションの問題と解決法をまとめたものである。それらをふまえて離散イベントスケジューラー、エルミート多項式、およびオブジェクト指向に基いた新しいシュミレーションの枠組みを提案し、最後に細胞シュミレーションのためのソフトウェア「E-CELL Version3」の設計と実装について説明している。
