Research Abstract

Various concepts of modern national culture were generated in the formation and development of the German and Japanese nation state since the 1870's. Within this process of conceptualization of national cultures, religious systems offered models for cultural orientation and political justification, and thus obtained great relevance in this social upheaval. The aim of the research project is to clarify the diverse functions of religiosity within the process of the formation of national culture concepts in Germany and Japan from a cultural studies and comparative religion perspective. A central focus of this interdisciplinary investigation lies on the transfer of the religious elements into secular discourses and movements, as well as on the transformation of originally religious concepts and elements in literature, philosophy, cultural theory, the arts, academia and sciences in Germany between 1870 and 1930 in contrast to comparable phenomena in Japan.
