Description

This is a teaching report on the two tracks of introductory kanji courses, which are designed to divide students based on their linguistic backgrounds, i.e., languages with or without Chinese characters, or kanji. In 2011, the Center for International Education and Research of the Hokkaido University (formerly known as the International Student Center) divided its introductory kanji courses into the two tracks. Since then, the syllabi of the courses have been restructured to solve the problems caused by the previous situation prior to 2011, that is, the mixture of students of different knowledge levels of kanji in one class. Moreover, the course materials have been revised to reduce the burden of learners, and to build learning skills for advanced levels. This report reveals how each instructor offered lessons in consideration of the learners’ attitudes toward kanji studies. While their classes provided students with opportunities to gain linguistic awareness, they helped to enhance their skills as independent learners of kanji and vocabulary.
