Description
The Plan of Search Test asks a respondent to draw a search route for a lost wallet inside a diamondshaped figure as if it were a large open playground covered with short grass. Although the test is for children of 9 to 12 years of age, adults often fail because of their insufficient extent of search. Analyzing a language protocol of problem solving for college students, it was indicated that a search space image was related to performance (Study 1). Suspecting their failure might be caused by ambiguity in the instruction, we modified the original instruction by exchanging “playground” with “field” and making the diamond twice as large (Study 2), and by emphasizing that the lost wallet can be visible only from a short distance and that drawing should be continuous (Study 3). The results of 655 college students showed that the modified instructions affected their images of the search space but had no effect on their performance. While cognitive developmental deficiency was not indicated for those who failed, their failure might reflect carelessness in the integration of instructional information and/or lack of consideration of what level of detail might be reasonable for answers to be generally acceptable.
