Abstract

Current universities in Japan hold a number of students with difficulties in academic abilities, motivation for learning, and adaptation to groups. This paper presents some research plans for support to difficult students by an ecological psychology approach. From this point of view, difficulties of students are considered consequences of maladaptively balanced perception-action circulation; Specification of adaptive perception of affordances and regulatory actions for the appropriate circulation is attempted; environments for the adaptive perception-action circulation are tried to identify. The project decided to introduce “Manabi-ai” practice (a kind of active learning) into class learning to simultaneously treat a wide range of students in their attributes and difficulties. This paper also has a short introduction to “Manabi-ai” practice to show its possibilities for difficult students to learn perceptionaction circulation driven by adaptive perception of cognitive/social affordance and regulatory actions for it.
