Description
Emperor Akihito's abdication on April 30 and Crown Prince Naruhito's accession to the throne in May 2019 marked an imperial transition from the Heisei to the Reiwa era. This is the fifth era under the "Issei-lchigen" system that began in th eMeiji era. In November 2019, the new emperor's enthronement ceremony and the "Daijou-Sai" (grand thanks giving rite) were held, even after the conclusion of which the Imperial Family's festivities continued. Although the Japanese Constitution has conferred upon the emperor the status of being a symbol of Japan and the unity of the Japanese people, conservative groups are actively revising the constitution and emperor becoming head of state. Thus, Japan's emperor system faces an uncertain future. In this paper, we examine the transformation of the modern emperor system, which began about l50 years ago, focusing on its property system and the imperial economy.
