Abstract

This study examines two main criticisms of American historian Daniel Boorstin : his elitist essentialism and his invalid categorization of consumers. In order to reveal the invalidity of such criticisms, it reformulates his basic concepts such as "images" and "pseudo-events." Moreover, this reconstructed viewpoint not only situates his work in the field of cultural studies (i. e., the "active" audience), bu t also in light of the theories of "MacDonaldization" (i. e. , the homogenization of cultures due to globalization) and "the culture industry" (i. e., the structural passivity of consumers). Based on the findings, Boorstin constructed a robust and convincing theory of consumption.
