In The Hobbit(1937) and The Lord of the Rings(1954-55), J. R. R. Tolkien(1892–1973) uses his Hobbit characters1, Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins, to explore the 'evil' hidden in the innermost recesses of the soul. This 'evil' can manifest itself as urges for power and fortune. Tolkien proposes a way to victory over this inherent 'evil' . In this paper, I will identify the 'evil' which Tolkien thinks leads human psyche to ruin and examine his original point of view concerning how we can overcome the temptations of our 'evil' spirits.
