Description

All records of Genus Hydrovatus Motschulsky, 1853 (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) collected in Toyama Prefecture were reviewed. From the results of literature, specimen, and field researches, two species of genus Hydrovatus, Hydrovatus acuminatus Motschulsky, 1860 and Hydrovatus stridulus Biström, 1997 were identified in Toyama. Hydrovatus acuminatus recorded at two localities, Himi-shi and Nanto-shi. However, Himi-shi's record is considered to be a misidentification of H. stridulus. Hydrovatus stridulus recorded at three localities, Himi-shi, Imizu-shi and Toyama-shi. The distribution of both species was biased toward the western and central parts of the prefecture. These areas are more hilly than the eastern part of the prefecture, with many reservoirs in the valleys. Due to these topographical characteristics, many shallow water stagnations preferred by Hydrovatus spp. were formed, which is considered to be the reason why their distribution was biased. The number of localities of Hydrovatus spp. found in Toyama is very small, and this tendency is similar in the surrounding prefectures of Toyama. Moreover, there is no existing locality as of 2021. Therefore, they are endangered in Toyama Prefecture.
