Description
This thesis is based on 48 examples of regression (23 Chinese sentences and 25 English sentences) taken out from works after 1980 (Chinese works: six novels, six parts of prose, two kinds of newspapers, one movie copy, one article and one preface; English works: two collections of essays, two collections of wise remarks). I classified these examples from the unit of regression. I made a contrastive study of them. The result of the contrastive study can be summarized as the following 3 points: 1. Chinese and English have different definitions about "the same pronunciation". 2. Only English has the regression by using a different form of the same word, and the regression of a morpheme. 3. There are two kinds of peculiar regressions to Chinese: one is the regression by a word order change of monosyllables. The other is the regression that was made by utilizing a characteristic of an adjective or a verb.
