Description
Purpose: To clarify patients' and their families' feelings about treatment and education when starting levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel therapy, and nurses' difficulties when providing patient education. Method: The subjects were nurses who had experience in introducing treatment. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 nurses (All of them were females) with an average of 9 years' experience as a nurse. Interview data were analyzed by Krippendorff's content analysis. Results: Five categories of patients' and families' feelings that were revealed included “the disease could be cured by this treatment”, “the symptoms could be significantly improved”, “didn't feel the treatment effect”, “felt the treatment effect”, and “medical equipment is heavy”. Five categories of difficulties when providing patient education that were identified included “difficulty of teaching due to levodopa wearing-off”, “application is difficult for the patients” and “difficulty of evaluation”. Conclusion: Patients and their families expected healing and symptom relief, and nurses had difficulty in teaching due to levodopa wearing-off and evaluating the effectiveness of the education. These results suggest that nurses should strengthen their multi-professional collaboration and hold regular conferences.
