Description

In everyday life, people often disclose their concerns to their friends or family and seek their nonprofessional support and advice. The act of self-disclosure can help improve both mental and physical health. However, not many studies investigate its psychological effect on a person who provides support and advice. One thousand six hundred participants in the age of 20s were included in this study to examine the effects on a person providing support. The study confirmed the factor structure and reliability of two types of scales: the one that measure the behavior of the person providing support to the person seeking support, and the other that measure the behavior of the person seeking support toward the person providing support. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that the state of psychological well-being(self-acceptance, environmental mastery, personal growth, purpose in life, autonomy, and positive relations with others)of the person providing support is affected by the behavior of the person seeking support as well as the supporter himself/herself, and vice versa.
