Abstract

Currently, many animal species on this planet are at risk of extinction, and the conservation of biodiversity is a pressing issue. The conservation program to maintain or recover the population of species outside their natural habitat by artificial reproduction at zoos, aquariums, etc, are called “ex situ conservation”. Establishment of pluripotent stem cells and in vitro production of germ cells have great potential to contribute to the successful ex situ conservation. Here, we introduce the history and current status of the establishment of iPS cells and in vitro production of germ cells in wild animal species, and discuss the future of ex situ conservation.
