説明

This paper examines the function and conditions of use of "nodearu + noda" sentences in Modern Japanese. Since nodearu is a stylistic variant of noda, the redundant duplication "nodearu + noda" is expected to be unacceptable. In fact, the structure "nodearu + noda" is acceptable, and I have considered the function and conditions of use for the "nodearu + noda" sentences from both the formal and semantic perspectives. From the formal perspective, the latter element noda is followed by conjunctive or sentence-final particles in the vast majority of cases. The succession of such a particle serves as one condition for "nodearu + noda" sentences because the former element nodearu is much less likely to be followed by a conjunctive or sentence-final particle than the other variants of noda. From the semantic point of view, the preceding clause must be a "self-evident" proposition with some basis of evidence. It is concluded that the former element nodearu has the function of presenting a "self-evident" clause, while the latter element noda represents the attitude of the speaker/writer. Interestingly, some "nodearu + noda" sentences have a stylistic specificity, similar to so-called 'character-ending' in Japanese.
