Description

For a new educational program in the General Education Course of the University of Tokushima, called “Mutually Creative Development by Practical Lecture”, we recruited assistant teaching staff from the local community from 2005. In the program “Experience, understand and put the welfare system of the community into practice”, we studied various subjects such as “Disabled persons’ welfare”, “Reform of education”, “Bioethics”, “The pacific war” and “Constitution of Japan”. In this class we made continuous efforts to have bi-directional communications between students and teaching staffs. In the other class “Handicraft and social communication-introduction to science” and “Handicraft and social communication-message of Ai”, we focused on the making of handicrafts with group discussions. The assistant staff played important roles on the group discussion as leaders of the group. Students got to know the assistant staff well, resulting in the active discussions in the class. To apply this educational program to the developing countries, we tried a similar program focused on “malaria” disease in the primary school class of Solomon Islands, one of the holoendemic areas of this disease. In the course of a field study, a risk map was made to indicate the habitat distribution of anopheline mosquitoes, the vector of malaria parasites. Not only school children but also school teachers and assistant teaching staff were satisfied with the program. Thus, this new educational program was verified to contribute toward developing the community health as well the health education for primary school children.
