Description

For social and solidarity economy (SSE) practices to contribute to reducing poverty and inequality, it is necessary to have “reciprocity” in addition to “solidarity.” It is also required to demonstrate “democratic solidarity.” The SSE encompasses citizens-led economic initiatives, which prioritize people and the planet over profit and operate with principles of cooperation, equality, inclusion, diversity, and democratic self-management. To explore SSE’s potential as an alternative to development in the global South, this article reviews two key concepts of SSE, i.e., “solidarity” and “reciprocity,” based on the discourse by Jean-Louis Laville and other leading scholars.
