Description

All over Japan, “Mascot Characters” exist and are based on some special products of a region, culture, history or other outstanding feature to attract people. Whenever these characters appear live (with people wearing full-size character costumes to animate them) at tourist sites or special events, they are instantly surrounded by crowds surging forward, exclaiming “kawaii! (how cute!)” and scrambling to have their pictures taken with characters.

In this report, a survey was conducted focusing on which “Mascot Character” is popular among university students. Two mascot characters, “Hikonyan” and “Kumamon”, were highly recognized and also the favorites of university students. This survey revealed that Hikonyan is popular because is cute and friendly. Kumamon is popular for more reasons apart from being cute and friendly, is easy to recognize, lovely, attractive, when people see him makes them feel better, etc.

The main cause of the feeling “Cute” are the tone of the colors (e.g. white, yellow, etc.), the round shape and also the shape of the animal, etc. The girls have more possession of mascot character goods than boys, from these results we can consider that “Mascot Characters” were created from the girl's perspective and thinking about them.
