Abstract

The chromosome numbers of 10 species in 4 families of Pteriomorphia are reported, using aceto-orcein squashes of eggs and fire-dryings of gonadal tissues. From two species of Mytilidae, 14 (n) and 28 (n2) chromosomes were counted, and from six species of Ostreidae 10 (n) and 20 (2n). From Pinna bicolor and Anomia chinensis, chromosome numbers of 16 (n), 32 (2n) and 7 (n), 14 (n2), respectively, were observed. It may be considered that chromosome number is constant in Mytilidae and Ostreidae. Chromosome complements of Saccostrea echinata, S. mordax, Crassostrea gigas, C. belcheri, Ostrea circumpicta and O. denselamellosa consist of metacentrics and submetacentrics, and in addition to these chromosomes Pinna bicolor and Anomia chinensis also have subtelocentrics.
