Description
The relationship between the fine structure and the thermal decomposition mechanism of silk sericin was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, gas analysis, infrared spectrophotometry and x-ray diffractometry.<br>Since the volume of CO2 gas generated in the second heating at temperatures reaching 200°C decreased more than that in the first heating. It is reasonable to assume that the amorphous region of silk sericin decomposes more readily than the crystalline region. The following mechanism can thus be proposed: Molecules of H2O are liberated from the side chains of amino acids such as aspartic acid, glutamic acid and serine, and the hydrolysis of the main chains takes place resumably through the utilization of these H2O molecules.
