Abstract

In the first case, an exploratory laparotomy performed on a 10-year-old thoroughbred mare showing signs of colic revealed an adhesion extending from the omentum to a section of the proximal jejunum and causing a strangulating obstruction to the distal jejunum. A 3 cm length of wire was found within the adhesion. Seven meters of nonviable necrotic jejunum were resected, and an end-to-end anastomosis was performed. The mare made an uneventful recovery. In the second case, a post mortem on a 12-month-old Anglo-Arab male that died subsequent to a period of depression, pyrexia, and colic revealed a perforation in the proximal jejunum, where a 4 cm length of wire was found encased in a fibrin clot. The authors suggest that contamination of feed by sharp foreign bodies can cause intestinal perforation and is therefore a serious horse-management problem.
