Lecithin: plasma cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity was measured in 40 patients with liver diseases by the change in cholesterol concentration after incubation of the plasma with a lecithin sol. The normal level of LCAT activity was found to be 93±17nmol/ml/hr. LCAT activity was lowered in patients with acute and chronic liver disease. LCAT activity decreased parallel with the severity of hepatocellular injury and more sensitively than serum levels of cholinesterase and/or albumin. LCAT activity was depressed by glycocholate addition in vitro over the concentration of 200μM.
