Description
The reactivity of thirteen different types of fly ash with a wide variety of quality was studied by automated particle analysis using FE-SEM/EDS. The particle analysis revealed that most of the FA used in this study is composed of two types of particles. One is a mixed particle of mullite and glass phase(mullite+G), while the other is a particle formed from an Al2O3-SiO2 glass system(AS). By comparing the M value of each FA, which was derived from its chemical composition using M=(CaO+MgO+R2O)/SiO2, it was found that the reactivity of AS is higher than that of mullite+G, and that the reactivity of mullite+G becomes higher with decreasing diameters of the particle. Accordingly, the activity index of FA is influenced by the reactivity of highly reactive particles such as mullite+G and AS as well as specific areas and volume fractions.
