Abstract

BACKGROUND : Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is a standard treatment modality for gallbladder disease. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and outcomes of LC.
METHODS : Data pertaining to 189 patients who underwent LC at Nakagami Hospital for symptomatic cholecystolithiasis, acute cholecystitis, or chronic cholecystitis between December 2014 and November 2015 were analyzed. Patients were divided into four groups based on BMI. Operation time, intraoperative blood loss, complication rates, and postoperative length of stay (LOS) were compared.
RESULTS : No significant differences were observed among the BMI groups with respect to operation time, intraoperative blood loss, complication rates, or LOS.
CONCLUSIONS : In this study, no significant difference between normal weight and obese patients was found for any of the outcomes of LC.
