The immune response of chickens to the dinitrophenyl group (DNP) conjugated to chicken gamma globulin (CGG) and DNP-bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been examined. Two lines, H and L, selected for high and low competences of graftversus-host reaction (GVHR) were used. Immune responses were controlled not only by the gene linked to the B complex, the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in chickens, but also by non-MHC-linked gene (s). It was found that there was no difference in relative responsiveness depending upon the carrier molecules conjugated to hapten. The relative immune responsiveness was B11/B11⟩B9/B11⟩B9/B9 and H⟩L in both anti-DNP and anti-BSA antibodies. It seemed that the action of the MHC-linked gene was additive or incomplete dominant. The results suggest that the relative magnitude of antibody responsiveness and of splenomegaly competence in GVHR are controlled under a common mechanism.
