Description

In the synthesis of forsterite from magnesia and silica, the sintering conditions giving onephase forsterite have been determined as follows;
a mixture of stoichiometric magnesia and silica, to which titania and methylcellulose are added as a sintering accelerator and binder respectively, is molded at 500kg/cm2 and then fired for 1h at 1600°C. The sintered body of synthetic forsterite so prepared had the following physical properties:
(1) the average hot modulus of rupture: 396kg/cm2, (2) the thermal conductivity is inversely preportional to temperature and is 2.14kcal/m·h·°C at 700°C, (3) the thermal expansion coefficient: 13×10-6deg-1 and (4) the modulus of elasticity: 4.6×105kg/cm2.
