Abstract

Objective: Recently, the number of patients with fatty liver which is one of lifestyle related disease were in creased according to the increment of obesity. Methods: We investigated blood hemoglobin levels in middle-aged men with fatty liver. Results: Blood hemoglobin levels were elucidated to be higher in males with fatty liver, compared to those without fatty liver, in both of non-obese and obese males. Further, blood hemoglobin levels in those with elevated liver enzymes were higher than those with normal liver-test results. Logistic regression analysis showed that blood hemoglobin was an independent related factor of fatty liver. Conclusions: These data indicate that blood hemoglobin levels are closely related to fatty liver. Since fatty liver in nonalcohobi steatohepdtiti (NASH) or chronic hepatitis C is known to be improved by intensive iron removal, such as phlebotomy therapy, iron in hemoglobin may be related to the occurrence and progression of fatty liver.
