Abstract
In order to use for training inspectors and improving inspection technique for fatigue cracks in steel girder bridge, fatigue cracks were introduced into an actual steel girder removed from site. A motor with eccentric mass and special jigs were used to apply loading to welded detail. Fourteen fatigue cracks were introduced various welded joints, such as upper end of vertical stiffeners, gussets welded to girder webs, ends of horizontal stiffeners, and end weld of gusset through web slit. By using copper wires of 0.04mm diameter, which helped us to stop fatigue tests when fatigue cracks initiated at designated sizes, cracks of various sizes were introduced. They can be used for training visual inspection and non-destructive tests to be used during periodic and special inspections of steel bridges.
