Abstract

Education for sustainable development (ESD) looks at the problems people face in their everyday lives from various angles. It aims to provide solutions to these problems, and to put these solutions into practice. Focusing on an elementary school domestic science subject, we verified whether, in a lesson that brought together consumption and the environment, pupils used ESD as a base to examine issues from various perspectives and apply them to practice. During classroom practice, the pupils were able to gain a better perspective on choosing products through the use of items familiar to them in their daily lives, and through visiting places where the items were sold. Further, the pupils became capable of making concrete judgements for themselves about the reasons for choosing a product. However, further improvements to the lessons are necessary to help the pupils develop a more multidimensional perspective..
