Description

Cerium oxide (CeO2) has been expected as a UV blocking material, especially for a sunscreen in cosmetics. However, high catalytic activity and pale yellow color of CeO2 are problems for practical use. In this study, a new UV blocking material consisting of Ce02 and turbostratic boron nitride (t-BN) has been synthesized using a reaction between boric acid and ammonia gas on the surface of CeO2 fine particles. The surface coating with t-BN was very effective in reducing the thermal and photocatalytic activities of oil decomposition. The mean sizes of the primarily and the secondary particles were 8 nm and 1. 4, μm, respectively. The coverage of the CeO2 surface with t-BN was 90%. From the UV-vis absorption measurement, it became clear that the BN-coated CeO2 particles showed higher transparency and more effective UV blocking than the conventional micronized titanium dioxide or zinc oxide particles.
