To evaluate objectively the effect of amikacin (BB-K8) on acute supprative otitis media and acute tonsillitis, a double-blind trial was carried out using aminodeoxykanamycin (AKM) as a control drug.
Effectiveness rate by total judgement on each disease in adult and primary school patients was 54.6% in BB-K8 and 70.0% in AKM in adult patients with acute supprative otitis media, and 83.3% in BB-K8 and 61.7% in AKM in primary school patients with supprative otitis media. Also it was 76.6% in BB-K8 and 75.5% in AKM in adult patients with acute tonsillitis, and 94.1% in BB-K8 and 88.2% in AKM in primary school patients with acute tonsillitis.
Statistical superiority of BB-K8 to AKM was noted in primary school patients with acute supprative otitis media (P<0.1).
In adult patients with acute supprative otitis media relatively higher effectiveness rate was seemingly obtained in AKM in comparison with BB-K8. Such results as obtained above and the assessments made in AKM so far may be concluded efficacy of BB-K8. As to the adverse reactions there observed no difference between both agents and no abnormality in hearing acuity was noted.
