Description

If an axial temperature gradient is imposed on a tube wall properly, a gas column in the tube begins to oscillate spontaneously. This is a mutual energy conversion called thermoacoustic effect, which can be applied as heat engine. It is carried out to analyze stability of self-excited thermoacoustic oscillation in a so-called Sondhauss tube: Helmholtz resonator that is imposed temperature gradient on its throat part. Based on boundary-layer theory, frequency equations of oscillation are derived in the framework of the linear sound wave. An idea of the fractional derivatives and renormalization are used in the process of derivation. As a result, it was found out that attaching a bulb remarkably decreases the critical temperature ratio and that the higher mode of oscillation appears.
