- Synthesis of Dimethyl Quercetin Derivative for the Purpose of Enhanced Radical-Scavenging Activity

Oxidative stress is important in the pathogenesis of coronary diseases, brain dysfunction and cancer. Previously, we have synthesized planar catechin derivative (PC) by which catechol and chroman moieties in (+)-catechin structure are constrained to be planar. PC is about 5-fold larger than that for (+)-catechin. The radical-scavenging activity of PC is enhanced by way of introduction of electron donating isopropyl moiety that results in the stabilizaition of radical cation. In this study, we have synthesized quercetin derivative for the purpose of enhanced radical scavenging activity. Quercetin derivative that has either mono or di methyl moiety at catechol was synthesized. The radical scavenging activities of them were examined using galvinoxyl radical as an oxyl radical species, showing the stronger radical scavenging activities than quercetin.
