Abstract

Purpose: To clarify the state of support for victims of sexual assault and attitudes toward them among obstetricians/gynecologists and nurses working at obstetrics/gynecology clinics.
Methods: A self-administered anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted by post, involving 103 obstetrician/gynecologists and 103 nurses working at 103 obstetrics/gynecology clinics in Kyoto Prefecture.
Results: 33 obstetrician/gynecologists and 22 nurses responded. More than 50% of obstetricians/gynecologists and nurses had treated victims of sexual assault; however, nurses only played an auxiliary role to the doctors in such support. Multiple items in the 11 support contents could involve proactive intervention by nurse to the extent permitted by law. Although the need to cultivate nurses capable of supporting victims of sexual assault has been recognized, results clarified that there are few opportunities to actually learn such skills.
Conclusions: Results demonstrated the need to realize nursing support that emphasizes the role of nurses and to increase opportunities for education to train nurses in providing support to victims of sexual assault.
