Description

In the early seventeenth century, many commentaries on Tsurezuregusa were published. The situation was such that it can be called the "Age of Commentaries" in the critical history of Tsurezuregusa. Among many commentaries, Tsurezuregusa Nozuchi, edited by Hayashi Razan, is particularly important. Moreover, the book's importance is not limited within the confine of Tsurezuregusa scholarship; it has influenced many aspects of early modern literature including kanazoshi (fantasies), ukiyozoshi (tales about social life) and joruri (drama). In this paper, I will investigate the application of the book's information to the plays by Chikamatsu.
