Description

Fukasawa Shichiro is a novelist who maintains a unique position through his sustained publication of the novels that disrupt modernistic assumptions of postwar Japanese literature. In this paper, I have examined Fukasawa's actual political commitment. He has consistently supported the left-Japan Communist Party, the United Students' Association (Zengakuren), Japanese Red Army (Sekigunha), United Red Army (Rengo Sekigun) and Japan Red Army (Nihon Sekigun). Underlying his commitment was an emotional radicalism that contained theoretical and factional contradictions. In the end, what Fukasawa sought was a kind of Utopia nurtured in the depth of his heart. I believe that the unique character of Fukasawa's revolt lay in that Utopia.
