Abstract

In Shin-sarugaku-ki, Fujiwara-no-Akihira analyzed the entertainments and professions of the tenth century in a sort of self-reflexive method of modern sociology. The first part of the book is devoted to a study of entertainments, especially the "sarugaku" Noh farce, while in the latter part the twenty-eight kinds of professions are described and studied. Although the two topics seem to be unrelated to each other, both of them can be approached in terms of performance or what Pierre Bourdieu calls habitus. Shin-sarugaku-ki self-reflexively foregrounds varieries of habitus, almost unconscious performances in daily life.
