Abstract

1. Art experiments at Expo’70 Looking back on Expo’70 from the perspective of art education, the following issues come into view: philosophy and theme, art director and art producer, symbol marks and pictograms, indoor pavilion displays and outdoor plastic arts, Expo museum of fine arts and modern-visual art, and the theme of aiming for “dreams and the future.” 2. Change in genre, subject, and theme of educational material content This paper attempts to describe the possibility that the issues of genre and theme in art education content in Japan were influenced by Expo’70. The materials analyzed were a guidance document titled “Guidance for the steps of conception (synthesis)” by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, textbooks of visual art, and children’s works in school drawing and manual arts. With the above taken into consideration, we recognized the importance of children facing a single assigned theme and creating their own themes and subjects and conceiving (synthesizing) on their own. In the future, it will necessary to examine the above hypotheses in detail in regard to each theme by using concrete materials from Expo’70 and the content used in art courses for study.
